Four candidates will vie for the title of Miss Coon Rapids at the annual scholarship pageant tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 17).

The pageant is at the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Performing Arts Center starting at 7 p.m. The candidates are Alison Vail, Kami Patrin, Emily Kalis and Paris Becker. The new Miss Coon Rapids will compete in the 2013 Miss Minnesota Scholarship Pageant in June 2013 with the winner advancing to the Miss America Scholarship Pageant later in the year.
The 2012 Miss Coon Rapids is Samantha Phillippi, who was a runner-up for the 2012 Miss Minnesota title. In addition, Kathryn Kueppers will be crowned Miss Coon Rapids Outstanding Teen 2013 at the pageant tomorrow.
Now in its 46th year, the Miss Coon Rapids Pageant has traditionally taken place as part of the annual Coon Rapids Snowflake Days celebration in early February. But a decision was made by the pageant committee to change the date, according to Diane Buszta, Miss Coon Rapids Scholarship Pageant director.
One reason is to give the 2013 Miss Coon Rapids more time to prepare for next year’s Miss Minnesota Scholarship Pageant and the second is that the pageant has traditionally taken place the same day as the annual Coon Rapids Junior Royalty

Pageant – the Junior Royalty has been in the afternoon and Miss Coon Rapids in the evening – and that has taxed the volunteer committee, whose members have run both pageants, said Buszta, who also directs the Junior Royalty pageant.
The Miss Coon Rapids Scholarship Pageant is an open event. Young women must live work and/or go to school within the state of Minnesota in order to be a contestant.
Contestants must be between the ages of 17 and 24 (17 on the day of the Coon Rapids competition and not older than 24 as of Dec. 31, 2012 to compete at Miss America 2013) and be at least 17 years of age and a senior in high school to compete at 2013 Miss Minnesota. In addition, the young woman must be a U.S. citizen. There are five competition areas – talent 35 percent; interview with the panel of judges Nov. 16, which includes a platform presentation, 25 percent; evening wear competition 20 percent; lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit competition 15 percent and on-stage question during the evening wear competition 5 percent.

The Miss Coon Rapids Pageant began in 1965 as a service project of the then-Coon Rapids Jaycees organization. The pageant was incorporated in 1986.
